Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolyn Cafferty.
Carolyn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After graduating from Bates College in 2001, I worked for an advertising agency in Boston, and I pretty much hated it. I felt trapped sitting behind a desk, becoming more and more unfulfilled by the day. My mother and my boyfriend (who is now my husband!) encouraged me to try hair school. After the first class, I was hooked. Upon graduating, I worked as an apprentice at a salon in Newton known for its amazing training program. Once I started taking clients, things really took off. I loved connecting with people, helping them achieve the color, style, and look they craved.
Communication is a huge part of the job; all too often, I find that what new clients are describing to me is not necessarily what their previous stylists had been hearing. After 8 years in Newton, my husband and I decided to move to Hingham. I started working at a local salon but quickly realized it was not a good fit for me. The other salons in the area didn’t offer what I was looking for either, making opening a salon of my own the next logical step. I had learned so much from my employer in Newton, and I felt confident that I had a blueprint for success. I was lucky enough to have other talented stylists around me who shared my vision and were willing to take a chance on me. We found a great space in Cohasset, opened our doors in March of 2015, and haven’t looked back since!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Does a smooth road really exist? I joke because I’ve actually been very lucky to be surrounded by great people. My family, stylists, and clients have been so supportive and helpful. I couldn’t have done it without them. Of course, there are always challenges when trying to navigate as a new business owner. Before we opened, we did have one major setback that caused many sleepless nights. I shudder just thinking about it. We needed to find a plumber to install a pair of state-of-the-art shampoo chairs. Simply enough, or so I thought. The problem was that the basement where the new pipes needed to be plumbed is a dark, wet, cramped space that many-a-plumber shied away from. Everything, from acquiring permits to stocking shelves, had to be put on hold until we finally managed to find a plumber willing to do the work. The whole ordeal set us back about 3 months. Tough way to start off.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Texture & Gloss – what should we know?
We are a boutique hair salon consisting of highly trained colorists and stylists. We push ourselves to stay ahead of hair trends, including Balayage, baby lights, precision cuts and razor techniques. I’ve been called a blonde specialist, but really, I just try to listen to my clients and create the hair that they’ve always dreamed of. I’m most proud of our reputation. We are known as a team of really talented stylists who put the needs of our clients above all else. Clients know that they can see anyone in the salon and still leave with consistently beautiful hair. I think what sets us apart from other salons is our atmosphere. We love what we do and it really shows. The salon is very comfortable and inviting, not pretentious. Clients really feel that and love it. They are treated to unparalleled service without the attitude.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe my biggest strength is my attention to detail. In any service-based industry, the smallest detail is often the one that counts the most. When a new client sits in my chair, we have a thorough consultation, and I don’t move forward with the cut or color until I am 100% sure that he or she is as confident in our game plan as I am. Trust is essential.
By asking lots of questions and answering any concerns, I can truly understand what a client is hoping to achieve. And then I deliver. It helps to be able to deliver. My goal is for our clients to feel like this is where they belong. From their initial phone call to walking out with a beautifully styled head of hair, our clients can expect the entire Texture & Gloss experience to be a memorable one. That’s the type of service I’d expect from my own stylist, and I won’t allow my clients to settle for anything less.
