Meet Carol Lee Kelliher of Carol Lee’s Cottage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carol Lee Kelliher.

Carol Lee, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My first job out of college was at a Madison Avenue advertising agency. I couldn’t believe how lucky I was.

I loved being part of the creative process and absolutely loved working with film. I went on to hold Executive Producer and Senior Creative Management positions at top national agencies in NY, San Francisco, and Boston.

It was an exciting career.

In 1997, I launched Kelliher & Company Inc in Boston. A creative recruitment agency specializing in placing creative talent at ad agencies across the country.

But then one day in March of 2016, on a walk down Bearskin Neck in Rockport MA, where I’d lived for 8 years… I saw a For Rent sign on a charming yellow building. Within 5 days I had called the number on the sign, signed a lease, closed my recruitment agency…and become a shopkeeper.

Random, exciting, and true. And meant to be. I couldn’t be happier.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The challenge of learning how to be a smart buyer was new to me. How much to buy and when. How to make smart choices. It wasn’t a struggle though. Everything about this new venture has been positive. I’m learning and have found great sources for my merchandise so it’s a smooth road now.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Carol Lee’s Cottage – what should we know?

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Being positive, friendly, and honest when I greet customers is most important to me, and to my success as a shopkeeper. Making a connection that gives them a pleasant experience. If someone leaves the store liking what they saw and happy they stopped by… that’s success to me.

I visit Carol Lee in her shop on every trip to Rockport. And I always come away with a perfect gift for a friend (or for myself!) plus the pleasure of her congenial conversation. The items and colors Carol Lee chooses are a delight, and price points are affordable.
