Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlin Fortuna.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up, I practiced Taekwondo. This martial art led me to travel a lot; different states within the US and also different countries around the world (Panama, South Korea, etc.). While traveling, I always loved taking photos! The people, events, culture, landscape, really anything interested me! Fast forward a little after having my son, I continued taking photos of him and sharing them with my family and friends. A few family members in particular always commented how great the photos were and suggested I take my skills to the next level. So for my birthday 2 years ago, my husband Darguin, bought me my first professional camera! I played around with it and enrolled in classes to obtain a Digital Photography certificate. I looked forward to my classes every week and continued to practice at home with my son on a daily basis.
As soon as I completed the classes and had the certificate in my hand, I knew this was something I really enjoyed and wanted to do all the time. So I went for it! I set up a website along with other social media, started doing model calls, and continued to work with family and friends to practice my skill and complete my portfolio! As time went on, my husband continued to support me and gift me new equipment. Before I knew it, 1 year had gone by and I couldn’t believe I had my own business up and running successfully. More so, I couldn’t believe all the support and encouragement my family and friends had given me! Each time a client would respond with a wonderful thank you, internet review, or giant smile on their face as they viewed the final photos, my motivation increased! This is why I do what I do. I started with taking photos as a teenager to keep memories for myself and now I strive to do the same for others.
Two years later, and things are going well. I have 2 beautiful children now who pose the best models for Fortuna Photography, along with friends and family who continue to support me with words of encouragement and referrals! I know I couldn’t have done any of this without God first and my family’s love and support. Although it may be difficult at times to balance work with being a stay-at-home mom, each time I get behind my camera, I know it’s all worth it!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have a passion for photography, but this does not mean I haven’t had struggles along the way. When I first decided to take my photography to the next level, I only had one child. Now, I have two small children and an architect husband who works long hours. I am blessed to be able to stay home with them but it hasn’t been easy. Attempting to edit photos, work on my website, or even leave them for long hours to go shoot has all been challenging. I guess when I started I didn’t know it would be this hard. When there are deadlines and crying babies, I just have to remind myself that the kids will eventually stop crying, the client will soon have final photos in their hands, and it will all be worth it.
Also, when I first got certified, we were living in the Lowell/Dracut area. Dracut is known to be very rural and I did not come across many photographers like myself. Then 1 year into my photography journey, we moved to Salem, MA. The North Shore is so rich in scenery, beaches, and amazing photographers! It has been a bit of a struggle to continue building clientele since moving here. But I know that if I am patient, wait on God, and continue to give the best service to my current clients, people will get to know me and the love I have and everything will work out!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I run a Lifestyle Photography business named after our family, Fortuna Photography. I specialize in Lifestyle Photography which means I love to capture people, milestones, and life as it really is. We offer Portraits for adults and children, families, and couples, maternity photo shoots, and coverage for events such as birthdays, baptisms, and intimate wedding ceremonies. Most photo shoots are done on location, but we do have a studio as well. I always tell my clients that I love to capture people and moments as they are. Meaning, in a typical session I will capture some posed photos then I will delve into the lifestyle aspect. The client may bring props that relate to themselves and then I will help make them feel comfortable to just be themselves as I capture their expressions, beauty, and fun!
I would definitely say my personality stands out. I am a very outgoing person and use that to make my clients feel comfortable, laugh, and just have a nice time while I photograph them. Tambien, hablo español fluido! I also speak Spanish fluently and pride myself on that.
Overall, I am really up for anything in the photography business and get excited when I have a new project where I need to get creative and accomplish the client’s vision!
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I had a lot of energy and was very talkative. I was very happy and excited for new adventures. I was also very athletic and determined. As I mentioned before, I practiced martial arts for 14 years and achieved a 4th-degree black belt. I was never afraid to try anything new and I hope to pass these traits on to my children. I believe the opportunities I had growing up and my approach to them definitely set the tone for the way I approach photoshoots nowadays. I also believe that “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” like the Bible says in Philippians 4:13.
