Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlin Flynn and Elyse Parkhurst.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We were both artistic and creative growing up, as there would always be an art project or craft on the table. I think we both knew we wanted to be designers from an early age, but it wasn’t until college that I really got excited about the whole process of interior design. Elyse and I met in college, and after graduation we decided we wanted to work for ourselves. We started our business in 2012, and from there we took on our first few projects. We were lucky enough to have some amazing clients that referred us to others! Here we are six years later, and now we’ve expanded to include the Boston area, as well as the North Fork of Long Island, NYC, NJ, etc.!
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s never always a smooth road, what fun would that be anyways?! There were certainly struggles, learning curves, and sacrifices that we’ve made along the way. One of the biggest sacrifices we’ve each made would have to be our time, as there were many late nights and weekends spent working – and still are! We had to learn a lot that was only learned through experience and our process has evolved over the years, and will continue to evolve as we grow. Learning what works best for us and our clients has allowed us to consistently improve and adjust the design process – resulting in a better overall design experience. Figuring out when we needed to expand our team, and take on an employee was a big leap for us as well! We hired our third team member, Emily, a little over a year ago, which was a huge step, but an amazing one!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with North Fork Design Co. – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We’re an interior design company that mainly focuses on residential interior design. Our projects range anywhere from a few rooms, renovations, to new builds, and we do everything in between. We’re young designers and the interior design industry has already changed so much since we’ve started. I think the fact that we’re able to evolve and grow with the industry as it changes is incredibly advantageous. We’ve also recently branched out to include some other hospitality type projects such as a restaurant, vineyard event space, and a local brewery. We love the fact that we’re able to take on clients in two areas (Boston & the North Fork), having strong ties to both! We feel most proud when we’re able to reveal the completed space to our clients and capture the end result of a design project with photography. It’s such a rewarding feeling to see a space come together how you envisioned it, and being able to appreciate all of the project phases that it took to make it come to fruition!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
We love being surrounded by the rich history that Boston exudes, through its architectural elements! We appreciate how Boston is constantly progressing, and its ability to highlight both historical, and new building trends – from the cobble stone streets of the North End, to the newly developed Seaport area! Each neighborhood has such character, making it easy to find inspiration throughout!
Being located on the North Shore, our least favorite part is, and will always be the constant traffic trying to get into the city (on time)!
