Meet Brittany K. Blando of BKB & Co. in Newbury Street

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany K. Blando.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have had a camera in my hands since I was a teenager. My father bought me a Pentax K1000 camera, and in high school I took a photography class. It was during this time that my first photo was published in a magazine. I’ll never forget the rush of excitement that brought me. I remember thinking, “Wow! My work was good enough to be featured!” I was instantly hooked on the idea of capturing a moment and having it printed and shared with the world. I knew then and there that I wanted to be a professional photographer.

After high school I enrolled in the New England School of Photography. It was the late 1990s and, at the time, I was the youngest student ever accepted into their program. NESOP is a two year, no-frills institution in Boston that specializes in the technical side of photography. I excelled in their fast-paced environment and started assisting fashion photographers and wedding photographers. I loved how weddings incorporated fashion, family history, and documentary-style photography.

I wanted to learn more, so I continued my education at The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. It was important to me to be a well-rounded photographer; to know the technical, historic, and artistic side of photography. I was privileged to study under Harvard and Yale University professors, specifically the documentarians Jane Tuckerman and Frank Gohlke. For my senior thesis I traveled to Ecuador to capture the people and culture through my lens. It was a wonderful experience that got me out of my comfort zone. I was thrilled when my photos were shown at a gallery in Boston, reaching hundreds of pairs of eyes.

I believe my success comes from years perfecting my photography approach: a photojournalistic style with a deep understanding of technique and editorial photography. I have always had a mind for business, which has helped me build BKB & CO. to the incredibly brand it is today. My supportive parents are both entrepreneurs, and growing up I watched how they ran their companies. I learned how to treat clients and employees. Respect is huge to me. I treat my clients and team members the way I want to be treated. I always strive to go above and beyond.

I started BKB & CO. during my senior year of college. I love the art of weddings and knew the kind of events I wanted to specialize in. I invested in top-of-the-line equipment and opened a studio in Boston’s Leather District. I worked primarily by myself for a decade, until the need to expand became overwhelming. Four years ago I made the leap and brought on some top-notch associates with the same educational background that I have. Our collaborative offers photography and videography services under the BKB umbrella. Top Boston wedding professionals and venues seek us out and recommend us to their clients consistently. Our work has been published in Boston Magazine, BRIDES, The Knot, and Bliss Magazine.

Having a talented team means BKB & CO. can branch out and reach more clients. We’ve recently captured photos and video for Marvel Studios, Panera Bread, Top Chef, and Shark Tank’s Daymond John.

What sets BKB & CO. apart from the many other Boston wedding and event photographers is our work ethic and education. All of the BKB & CO. associates hold four-year degrees in photography and film. We all pitch in to help each other, ensuring that we are exceeding our client’s expectations. Each year I personally mentor photography students. I strive to teach them the basics of photography and business, but also to help build their confidence and show them what it’s like to work as a team. This new generation of photographers keeps me excited about this industry. And while they’re supposed to be learning from me, I always learn something new from them, too!

For years it was my dream to open a Newbury Street location. Making this dream a reality was a huge step in the right direction for my company. BKB & CO. has been at 213 Newbury Street for three years, and I couldn’t be happier.
