Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Cuddy.
Beth, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In my work as a child and family photographer, and a mom, I’ve learned some important things – that our kids are wonderful and precious in all their “imperfect” moments. That we parents, too, are dedicated, loving and great, even as we make our mistakes and learn from them. That our children grow up fast, and so we should not put off celebrating our lives, waiting until we lose those extra pounds or our son’s braces come off. That capturing these fleeting days will absolutely be worth it.
As a young girl, I loved poring over the pages of our family’s photo albums, especially with my friends. Sitting on the floor, showing them my grandparents, my mom’s childhood dog, and our family’s first house in New Hersey, made me feel like my friend was really getting to know me. Later, in college, and then raising my own family, I loved using my camera, building our own family albums and creating our own stories.
Remembering to capture the precious, day-to-day moments is huge. When my youngest daughter turned two, we had a flower garden themed party for her. As the guests arrived, she was wearing those sunglasses where each lens flips open and closed separately, a purple boa, pink tutu and strappy silver sandals. Now that she’s older, and probably not going to put on that ensemble again, I can’t even describe how glad I am to have those photos of her.
I’ve felt the crazy stress of being the mom whose child will have nothing to do with the special outfit that’s been planned for her. Arriving at a wedding, and having my daughter absolutely refuse to wear the flower girl dress. What did I do? I did what any panicking mom who was also the maid of honor might do – I looked desperately into my husband’s eyes and said something like, “THIS! CAN’T! HAPPEN!”
So yes, I’ve lived and learned, as my small children grown. And I’ve developed my passion for life-inspired photography, taken courses and honed my craft so I can create the beautiful, natural images you will cherish forever. I know there are many questions most new clients have. I understand your need to figure out what you’d like to do with the art we create. I can help with that. We can discuss the option. I can advise you on clothing choices, color palettes, and special locations for your session. I’ll share tips and tricks for creating a smooth session. And don’t worry, I love finding that silly sound or funny story that will start your family giggling!
When I photograph tiny newborns and slightly bigger littles, I tune into feeding times, napping routines and keeping everyone safe, warm and happy. With kiddos on the move, there is freedom to be playful, have fun, and to let them express their unique personalities.
I welcome you to check out the images on my website, bethcuddyphotography.com, to see if my work suits your style. As you look, know that YOU can have images like these too! It’s not about you or your children being perfect – it’s about creating a beautiful, flattering and natural reflection of whom you are. You’ll receive images that are professional, gently edited, the very best of our session. You’ll love the results!
And maybe someday your child will sit on your family room rug and turn those album pages with her friends, loving the memories.
One more thing. As parents, grandparents or other adults who love children and care deeply about their wellbeing, I want you to know that Beth Cuddy Photography is committed to supporting the lives of children and their families. We will donate 10% of each session total to Family Service of Greater Boston, who, since 1835, has carried out the mission “to promote the self-sufficiency and well-being of at-risk children, youth and families by providing innovative, culturally competent and integrated social services to help people reach their fullest potential.” I’m sure we share the wish for all children to lead happy, healthy lives.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s taken some time to create a studio space that allows me to do the kind of indoor work I love to do, with a light area feel, in shades of white. After planning and rearranging a light-filled room with great potential, I now have a cozy, light studio, which is great for newborns and slightly older babies. The photos I create here are free of unwanted clutter and competing colors, yet do not have a stiff or posed studio feel. I love to shoot with just natural light, and this space has plenty!
Beth Cuddy Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Beth Cuddy Photography specializes in photography of babies, children and families. We can work in my light and airy studio, or in my client’s home. We can also have our session outdoors, or in a place that has special meaning to my clients. We are a small, high quality and very personalized studio. Nothing is mass produced. I spend lots of time working with clients ahead of our session, to work through our ideas and vision for the images we want to create. And the shoot itself is not rushed in any way. I am there, shooting every session, and will spend whatever amount of time it takes to get the results that my clients want. With children, especially, it’s very important to take the time needed for changing, snacks, or just a break, and that is normal!! I understand children’s needs, as a mom of four, and by taking that time, our session will be so much more fun, and our photos will be beautiful!
I also am very proud of the careful, dedicated work I put into editing my clients’ images after our session. I work on each image individually, perfecting each image before it goes out. And this is all done in a timely manner, so that my clients can enjoy their photos soon after their session! We stand out as a photography studio that does top quality work, with very personal, individual attention. I believe this is why we develop long-term, great relationships with our wonderful clients. We want to serve you as your family grows.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I was so honored to be asked to photograph a huge family celebration, a 50th wedding anniversary party. It was such a big milestone, gathering so many family members, and celebrating this loving, devoted couple who’d been married for so long, through their ups and downs, and raised 3 great kids. They were an amazing example of enduring love for each other, and for their big, extended family.
It was very special to be the photographer chosen to capture the many moments that night. I was so proud to be given this responsibility. A night that wouldn’t be repeated. It unfolded beautifully, and I moved around, capturing the newborn sleeping in his car seat, the toddlers wiggling to the music, the fathers dancing with their daughters, and cousins dancing the in a big circle, and of course, the couple, married so long, and still so much in love. So many moments to catch, and I was so happy to see the photos and to know that I had helped them hold this very special night in their minds and hearts. The incredible feeling this gives me is how I know that this is my life’s work.
