Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Dooley.
Kevin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I worked for Grossman Lumber Co., as an assistant manager, back in the early 90’s. When Grossman’s decided to add rental centers to their stores I became involved in that part of the business. We met a man, Ernie Delle Donne, who owned a rental company in Somerville and he became our adviser. Over the next few years Grossman’s was having financial issues and store closings were imminent. I got to know Ernie very well & he said to me “one day you will be working for me”. Well the day my first son was born I called him and told him I was ready to come to work for him. My son was born on Christmas Eve & I started working for Koral Equipment on January 23rd.
Eventually with the National rental companies moving into the Boston area, Ernie sold his business to United Rentals. I left Koral in 1998 and went to work for Jay Cashman managing Sterling Equipment Rental. In April of 2000 I started my own company and named it Bay state Equipment Rental & Sales Co., Inc. I originally had 2 partners, one who relocated to North Carolina in 2005 and the other a silent partner whom I bought out in October of 2016.
Currently we have expanded to 2 locations, opening up a branch in Plymouth in 2011. We have maintained our goal which is “To provide equipment that works, when the customer wants it and at a fair price”!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Business is never always smooth, there have been many bumps along the way. The banking crisis of 2008 saw a drastic decrease in construction loans causing a reduction of projects being started. This trickled down to our receivables being stretched out causing our payables to be extended as well. Foresight on our part kept purchasing at a minimum as we weathered the storm.
As the economy improved so did demand, which resulted in some growing pains for us here at Bay state. Fortunately we were able to hire quality employees to provide the exceptional service we demand.
Please tell us about Bay state Equipment Rental & Sales Co., Inc.
My role in our team here at Bay state is basically operations manager. I schedule the deliveries, dispatch the trucks, handle all of the purchasing and meet with all of our vendors.
I am most proud of our employees, we have an exceptional team who show up every day and work hard, all while having fun doing it. We stress family first here and we treat everyone as if they are family.
We have a very loyal customer base with whom we truly enjoy working with. We are open Monday thru Friday but on numerous occasions have opened on a weekend or a late evening to serve our customers.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Attending game six of the 1975 World Series, the night Carlton Fisk hit the pole!
