Meet Anne Lee of Anne Lee Photography in Boston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne Lee.

Anne, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been passionate about photography, but the dream to pursue my own business started during my junior year of college when I was living in Florence, Italy. One of my close friends had just passed away and I was living in a new city where I didn’t know anyone. I was so inspired by the cities I traveled to and taking photos really got me through that time. Over those five months, I became obsessed with creating photographs and learning as much as I could about the art of photography. That was when I first knew I wanted this to be more than just a hobby.

When I returned to college for my senior year and all of my friends started applying for jobs, I decided I’d go another direction and start my own photography business. I wanted to design a career around being creative while also being able to spend time creating real, genuine relationships with people. I knew it was a risk but I also knew I’d always regret it if I didn’t chase this dream. I told myself I’d give it everything I had for one year, and if it didn’t work out at least I’d know I tried. I moved home and spent every moment of that year working on my business. I’d stay up all night, too excited to sleep brainstorming ideas, taking classes, and photographing everything I could get my hands on. During that first year, things really started to take off and I knew I could make my business a full-time job.

My friends in college would always joke about how much I “loved love”, so naturally my business started off revolving around weddings. Since that first year, I’ve shot over 100 weddings all over Boston & New England and it never gets old. I’ve been photographing some of the same families for 6 seasons now. I’ve been able to photograph couples and their families at weddings, and then continue to photograph them as they have children and create families of their own. My clients often become great friends of mine, and through my business, I’ve been able to create my own little family. It’s been everything I dreamed of and more.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting a business at such a young age I, of course, encountered people who doubted me or didn’t necessarily take me seriously. Those first couple of seasons I felt that I had so much to prove. Being a creative entrepreneur can be a lonely experience at times. You’re working all the time, and relying solely on yourself. You’re constantly trying to be financially successful but also pushing yourself creatively and artistically. There’s no manual to follow, and there’s not really anyone to turn to when things are difficult. I wouldn’t have had it any other way, but those first couple of years there were definitely struggles!

From my experience, I’ve actually created a mentor program for photographers that are just starting their own journey. Helping other young creative entrepreneurs has become one of the greatest joys of my job.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Anne Lee Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m a lifestyle photographer. I specialize in photographing people throughout important moments of their lives. Whether it’s a wedding, an engagement session, a family session, or just photographing an individual to document their story; my business revolves around capturing genuine, real moments in people’s journeys. My images are candid and natural. People have always told me that I have a way of making them feel comfortable. I truly care about every one of my clients, and I try my best to create genuine relationships with them. I think this shows through my work.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’m not sure luck has had much to do with it, however, the incredible amount of support that I’ve had from my family and friends has been crucial to my success. I’m beyond lucky to have an amazing support system.

Anne photographed our daughter’s wedding. What a beautiful selection of photos we had to choose from! One was better than the next! She has an unobtrusive way about her quickly weaving herself, and us, into the neccessary groupings or finding the best light!
