Meet Angela Spagna of A&R Creative Photo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Spagna.

Angela, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I broke into hockey photography about six years ago, around the same time that I started playing recreational ice hockey. Prior to that, I was very into flowers, macro and landscape photography. I was asked by a client/friend who had just acquired a hockey blog now the news/media site (BruinsDaily) if I would be interested in shooting some hockey. I started shooting the AHL team Providence Bruins games and gradually worked into shooting the NHL Bruins games.

I am currently responsible for half of the Bruins home games and I am heading out to shoot some away games this season as well. Out of this arose my own photography business. A&R Creative Photo was born when I paired up with local artist/photographer R.E.Hergert (personal photographer to the local band Aerochix). We were asked to photograph a friend’s wedding, who wanted the whole event to be non-traditional including the way it was photographed. Our signature “artistic” style was a big hit and we now incorporate that into our weddings, lifestyle and event photography. The goal is to give the client the feeling that their event or session is unique.

I recently had some of my work in Estetica Magazine and Modern Salon where the salon I work at (Avanti) was featured in their pop-up blowdry salon over the holidays. I am always up for expanding my horizons and my portfolio. Living, learning, loving what I do!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Juggling a career and starting your own business is not without a struggle. Luckily the creative process of both comes easily to me. It is the business part that seems to be a bit of a learning curve. Paperwork, contracts, marketing etc., these things all take time. I could be working all day at the salon and my day doesn’t end there, when I get home I need to attend to my own business.

A&R Creative Photo – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
This business was designed to bring in the flavor and creativity of two different artists together as one. I am very proud of the fact that both styles merge so seamlessly in the storytelling. It gives the final product a more unique, less static feel.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
For me, success is one happy client at a time. Nothing makes me happier than to watch my clients looking at their photos and hear their comments and oohs and aahhs or when I run into someone who has seen my work and they make a point to tell me how much they like it.
