Meet Amelia Childs of Manipura Body & Mind in Roslindale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amelia Childs.

Amelia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Manipura Body & Mind began as a hobby. I work in the food industry and first began creating my lip balms and bath bombs while I was General Manager of Squeeze Juice Company. I was growing frustrated with being unable to find high-quality vegan bath and skin care products that were free of chemicals and didn’t test on animals. It just started in my apartment. I first made them for me and then began giving lip balms and bath bombs to co-workers, friends, and family and everyone really seemed to like them. Around this time I received my Reiki Master Attunement and began experimenting with infusing the products with Universal Life (Reiki) Energy. The wheels started turning and I wondered if it would be something I could sell. I started sampling out products to some of my best customers at the juice bars and everyone I gave a sample to come back asking where to buy more. So I started selling directly.

Soon after I had the opportunity to start my own café, The Broken Grounds Vegetarian Café & Juice Bar located in Newton Highlands, so Manipura Body & Mind had to be briefly put on hold but in December 2016 I registered the business with the state and we were good to go!! I started wholesaling to a few small stores around Massachusetts. our element of being Reiki Infused was a hit with metaphysical stores such as Ritual Arts in Allston, Crow’s Haven in Salem, and The Coven’s Cottage in Salem. I also created our website and began doing more direct sales online. In June 2017 my café had outgrown it’s space in Newton so I opened CrepeBerry Vegetarian Café in Wellesley Hills, MA and was able to start hiring employees for Manipura Body & Mind while I grew both of my businesses. Right now we’re in the process of expanding our brand and trying to get more wholesale accounts throughout New England and the Tri-State Area.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest hurdle for me so far has been having multiple new businesses (I always call them baby businesses) starting at once and balancing everything. The cafes were a tremendous amount of work to get off the ground and sometimes Manipura had to take a back seat while I worked on them- it’s hard being behind the counter 85 hours a week AND finding time to meet with other business owners to try to get Manipura on their shelves. That being said I always look at challenges as an opportunity to grow and learn. I’ve learned a tremendous amount about time management and delegating through this process which has been a very valuable lesson.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Manipura Body & Mind story. Tell us more about the business.
All our products are completely vegan and handcrafted. I personally infused each one with Universal Life (Reiki) Energy. It’s a fun processes, although sometimes hard to explain. In the same way, a Rabbi blesses kosher food a Reiki practitioner “blesses” or meditates over an item to give it energy. While we carry bath scrubs, eye creams, and lotion bars, my favorite products are our bath bombs and lip balms. The bath bombs are made with organic coconut oil which leaves your skin feeling so soft when you leave the bath and are made with dried flowers that float to the top of the tub and make for a relaxing ritual. Our lip balms correspond to each of the seven major chakras and are intended to give the user a subtle reminder throughout the day to relax for a moment and focus on self-care and balancing themselves.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
My favorite quote is “I am a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it”. I have been extraordinarily blessed in all of my businesses that people have been so receptive to my vegan and vegetarian products. Many times it feels like pure luck all the business connections I have made throughout my career but I know that is all part of a universal plan that I attract these blessings to me.
