Meet Allana Fabrikant-Kanevsky of Extology Salon in North End

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allana Fabrikant-Kanevsky.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Allana. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have been in the salon industry since 1997 and it has been quite a journey.

My senior year in HS I got a job working at a salon as a receptionist, which quickly lead to an assistant manager position and opened up a whole new world to me. Everything about the business fascinated me. I annoyed the stylists with constant questions of why and how. I wanted to know everything!!!! By the time I was 19, I got the nerve to tell my parents that I no longer wanted to be an attorney and I was going to hair school.

After graduating from hair school, I worked in some of the most prestigious salons in Boston and New York City. This was an incredibly rewarding privilege that gave me the opportunity to learn from the best European and American masters in the industry. It allowed me to become a Goldwell and Wella certified master colorist, and a master stylist.

I began my journey into hair extensions certification of every brand and method out there! The more I learned the more I wanted to know. For quite some time this was just a fascination with the fun cosmetic changes that I could provide for someone who wanted to change/enhance or play with their look and it was glorious.

Through my research and experience I learn something new every day. My journey has brought me to a place in my life that I am now able to help not just those of us who want to look good for fun, but I am able to help those of us who just want to look whole. Looking like you have healthy luscious hair is everyone’s dream and now I can get them that much closer to it. I am now able to help women with hair loss, for many medical reasons, hereditary reasons, hair replacement/augmentation due to gender reassignment, or just simply a bad haircut or hair that just won’t grow.

I am now the owner of Extology Salon where we are creating a culture where everyone is welcome, This is a judgement free zone where we offer gorgeous healthy, fabulous looking hair. We have been an amazing team since 2015 with incredible human being who are talented, compassionate and rapidly growing.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Has anything in life worth doing ever been a smooth road?

I don’t know if there is enough room in the section for me to even begin………

I will say this:

I have learned that people can disappoint you to the point where you ALMOST want to give up on humanity and just right before you do they prove to you that there are those worth fighting for.

You have to believe in the good! People and situations. There is always something to learn, even out of the worst experiences.

There is nothing worth more than the health and happiness of the people around you.

My hardest daily struggle is being strong, knowing that you are doing the right thing and not giving up on your dreams no matter how small or big or scary they might be.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Extology Salon – what should we know?
Our salon is called Extology, a term my husband Alek came up with while wandering the streets of NYC with me. It is the creative science for a beautiful you.

We are a full service hair salon, that specializes in hair extensions, hair restoration and hair enhancement for women and men. We offer all the latest hair color, cutting and styling techniques while focusing on maintaining the health of our clients’ hair. We make the well-being of their hair our top priority, while making them look their selfie best 😉

I’m most proud of how incredible our salon family is! Each person truly cares about every person that comes through our doors, about each other and each other’s success. There is no cattiness (like I have experienced in MANY other salons), our team helps each other grow, support one another, and always want to do and be their best. I truly love them! With their help, after being open for only one year, our salon was awarded Best of Boston 2016 for Best Hair Extensions by Boston Magazine, we were named one of the top new business in Boston by Boston Globe Magazine, and won CityVoter’s Top 5 A-List Salons.

The services that we offer are quite rare in our industry. They require knowledge, patience and compassion.

What sets us apart is we are here to do more than just do your hair when you sit in our chair. We make everyone feel welcome and at ease no matter how embarrassing they think their situation may be. We work to educate our clients and help them be the best (hair version) of themselves. The best part of what we do, is giving people their self-esteem back and sometimes boosting it :):)

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My husband Alek!!!!! My rock! My everything!!!!! Without him I would have NEVER done any of this. He is my partner and my biggest support group, my cheerleader and my rock! He is not only the brains behind the business end of this, he is the incredible design eye, our brand guru, our social media director, the organizer of everything we do and the one who makes me laugh every day. This is as much his baby as it is mine. No matter what life has thrown at us, he is always by my side.

My mom has always been the strongest person I knew. I’ve watched her fight for her life, without giving up, even after she was told her cancer was terminal, she fought and stayed alive longer than anyone with her type of cancer. She fought even when the doctors didn’t think she had anything left and it was impossible for her to stay alive, she fought because she had to make it to my brothers wedding. She made it and to his wedding and she fought to be strong enough so no one to know she was dying. If she could do the things she did, while going through the pain and agony that she went through, I know I have the strength in me to do the things I need to do.

My father who has never given up believing in me and supporting me no matter how many times my life changed direction. Who has taught me to be diligent and think everything through. Measure 7 times, cut once! (Russian proverb)

Overall I have to say our family have been our biggest supporters. I can’t tell you how much I thank my lucky stars on a daily basis. Between my family and my husband’s family I could not be more lucky.

    Good afternoon,

I would like to have a consultation regarding a hair weave. I have thinning hair on the top of my head due to a thyroid condition. I have tried a hair piece but don’t like them since they are too heavy and don’t feel secure. I have a friend who thinks a weave would be a great idea since they are done in smaller sections and not a large piece. Not sure if you can help, but you seems to have have great reviews online.
