Life and Work with Mia Moran

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia Moran.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a bestselling author, speaker, podcaster, entrepreneur, and mom on a mission to change the way our families eat — one family, one meal, and one day at a time.

I did not grow up understanding the power of food. My family was quite taken by the rise of fast, easy, frozen foods and take out. If I got sick, I took medicine.

Ten years ago, I was a working mom and wife with three kids under the age of five. I ran an award-winning graphic design company on a crazy schedule, cursed the extra pounds on my frame, and always had a coffee in hand to get me through the day. I was exhausted. I operated in survival mode most days, always felt short on energy and time, and was at my wit’s end by the time, I was supposed to get dinner on the table.

One day, noticing a large stack of coffee cups piled on my desk. I drew a line in the sand.

What changed? I made the decision to feel great. I believed it was possible. I found support. I took action one doable change at a time. I now have the tools to be the best I can in every one of my roles, every day. I created PlanSimple for when other busy women are ready to draw their line.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
PlanSimple was my second entrepreneurial journey. I had a boutique design studio for 12 years. While I ran the design studio, I had my three kids, had a major health crisis and then transformed my health with food and lifestyle choices. I felt very quickly felt drawn to help other women do the same. My biggest struggle was I jumped ship a bit before I was ready, and had an expensive blogging hobby, that included a high-end digital magazine before I had a business. I knew how to run a business, but I did not understand different business models. I did not understand how I could make money. I wish I had sought mentorship a bit earlier.

There were many small obstacles like I wanted to write a book, but I am mildly dyslexic. I needed to be able to speak, but I was scared to death. I desired a podcast, but I had never done something like that. Those obstacles were great learning experiences.

Please tell us about PlanSimple.
PlanSimple helps busy moms live healthier and happier lives by planning smarter.

We try to offer as much as we can for free. We have a podcast and lots of great planning sheets and eBooks on our website. When women want to dive deeper, we have created the FLOW Planner, which is a beautifully designed, 90day, paper planner that has space to plan for Food and wellness, Lifestyle and family, Om (aka spirituality and self-care), and Work and creativity in one place. Women who want accountability join FLOW365, our one-year program that goes through the FLOW process four times.

I have written a bestselling book that helps busy families plan for gluten-free, plant-centered meals and talk at schools around the country.

We are supporting moms, but we also are supporting doctors, health coaches, and wellness practitioners who have prescribed a lifestyle change to a family that is harder in practice than in theory. We help families create those new habits.

Who have you been inspired by?
I have always been inspired by my two grandmothers. In their own ways, they taught me to care about aesthetics and asking for what I want. They were both deeply giving to people in their communities. One of them just turned 100 last year, and I believe she got to where she is by surrounding herself by great people and always rolling up her sleeves to help.

I have been inspired by family members, chefs and health coaches who have taught me how to cook with real food over the last eight years. They showed me how important, and feminist, making food from scratch for your family is. Really food is behind my most productive days.

And I am super grateful for the many business coaches I have worked with, who have been my business school along the entrepreneurial journey. I have learned and practiced mindset, writing, speaking, marketing. Could not have gotten here without their strategy.
