Meet Kristen and Ryan Hollingsworth of Lolo Poke Beverly & Lice Clinics of America Danvers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen and Ryan Hollingsworth.

Kristen and Ryan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey as an entrepreneur started with an unfortunate case of head lice making its way through my household. After weeks of failed home treatment kits I sought professional help and stumbled upon the Airalle, a FDA cleared chemical free lice treatment.

It seemed to be perfect since I had been a practicing hairstylist for years and it was a niche market in our area. In January 2015 I opened our doors to the public and the adventure began. For my second Business, I am happily partnered up with my husband, Ryan.

After a family trip to Hawaii, during which we discovered and fell in love with the dish “poke”, we did some market research and felt we had discovered another “niche” business opportunity. We opened Lolo Poke in Beverly in January 2018 and are now in the process of opening our second location in Newburyport.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being an entrepreneur, regardless of the industry, comes with its challenges. In the head lice industry, the biggest hurdle to face was just making ourselves well known in the area. It took a lot of digital and ground marketing to build a name for ourselves and become the go-to resource for head lice removal in the area.

The hardest part of the process with this business was staying positive on the hard days, learning to budget properly, and finding Marketing angles that were appropriate and effective. With Lolo Poke, although I felt we had become “seasoned” business owners, I never could have imagined how difficult the food industry is.

The hardest part of opening the restaurant for us was developing an efficient operating system. We worked very hard to implement great communication, inventory tracking, and an ordering system that allows our staff to be hands-on in all aspects of operations. It took a lot of time, trial, and error, but we did it and it has made running the business much easier on us.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Lolo Poke Beverly & Lice Clinics of America Danvers – what should we know?
With the lice clinic, we specialize in safe, non-toxic head lice removal. We are known for our exclusive FDA cleared Airalle treatment. As a company, we are most proud of how we get to help people every single day. Our clients are so grateful and it is an oddly fulfilling job.

At Lolo Poke, we serve Hawaiian Poke Bowls. This food trend is new to the area and is catching on fast. We are most known for our signature bowls, a customer favorite, and our unique, mainland twist on a traditional Hawaiian dish. Our flavor is unique to our restaurant- our secret fish marinade is something we are very proud of.

As a company, the most for the filling part has been our ability to incorporate the community into our little place. We enjoyed participating in outreach and are happy to be able to do s as a company, and most for the filling part has been our ability to incorporate the community into our little place. We enjoy participating in outreach and are happy to be able to give back to the community.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
With both of my business ventures, I always adopt an “open book policy”. There is no better way to open a brick and mortar business and get integrated into your target market quickly than to involve the people around you as much as you can whether it is in face to face interactions, just incorporating your business into casual conversation, or reaching out via social media.

As soon as I decide to move forward with a Business I start putting my feelers out for feedback from the local community and it has produced amazing results and added another level of pride to our businesses. Being community oriented and seeing value in your market is essential.
