Conversations with the Inspiring Lindsay Holt and Jenn Nickerson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Holt and Jenn Nickerson.

Unfortunately, 6 years ago, Lindsay was out of work for back surgery. Recovery was terrible and she was limited to the couch. It kind of just hit her that she should try a craft while sitting and that met her style. “I’ve never been a ‘jewelry’ person, but I always had a necklace on.” She had some hardware washers in the tool box along with different patterned paper and gave it a shot. She was pleasantly surprised with the outcome that she wanted to share them with friends and family. Through the years, since Jenn came on to the scene and the two created a more evolved business. With Lindsay’s eye for Cape Cod style and creating one of a kind pieces and Jenn’s stellar marketing and organizational skills, Washershore has become what it is today.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There are definitely lessons that have been learned, this has been a six-year process. What products work the best, a different type of hardware, etc. We never want a product to leave our workspace that we won’t back 100%. It’s the fine-tuning that happens constantly. We’re still looking to broaden our scope and always try and think outside the box. Trial and error happen daily. Sure, it’s easy to get frustrated, however, we always revisit every idea. Never feel timid asking for help from fellow small business owners. We’ve realized that most are willing to share their tricks of the trade and are happy to help. We’ll never forget our first outdoor craft fair, anxious as could be. The vendors next to us said, “You’ll never forget your first, and you’ll look back at yourself a year later and realize how far you’ve come.” They were right. Jump in feet first, and have a little faith, and always look back at growth.

What should we know about Washershore? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Washershore pendants are crafted from a 1″ (relative to the size of a quarter) stainless steel washer. Each pattern is constructed from different types of paper and finished with a silver plated bail and dimensional glaze. The glaze adheres to both front, back and sides to ensure a tight seal. We have created custom pieces that have included: Logos, mascots, wedding dates, sports teams, and custom colors.

When we first introduced Washershore, the reaction we had from locals and visitors was exactly what we wanted to hear. Our jewelry was extremely unique and they had never seen anything like this before. Customers loved that we were upcycling hardware washers and making them into something beautiful. “It goes beyond the limits of just jewelry”, which sets us apart from others.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
We are huge social media fans. We feel like marketing on Instagram and Facebook, along with connecting with our customers is a daily occurrence. Whenever we’re in our studio, we always have Spotify on playing “Have a Great Day” playlist. We’ve also been known to binge “Serial” on podcast.

LOVE this product!! Lyndsay and Jenn do such a great job! Just ordered 6 last week for the summer!! I have a hard time with metals due to an allergic reaction, and don’t have an issue with these, because of the process they use! Highly recommend for the value, style, and ease of wear!!
